POSSUM

Post Office Subtitle Maker

Local audio transcription with subtitle and editorial exports.

Version 1.1.0 beta
Apple Silicon + Intel · macOS 12+ declared
First-use model downloads require internet; processing then runs locally.

Prepare your audio

Choose WAV, MP3 or M4A. PCM WAV supports 8-, 16-, 24- and 32-bit audio. Convert float WAV, AIFF or FLAC to PCM WAV first. The source is not changed; WAV is mixed to mono and resampled internally for transcription.

Transcribe

Choose an audio file, a model and a language, or Auto-detect. Base is the default model. Click Transcribe and wait for completion. The first use of each Whisper model downloads its weights; later use works offline. Larger models need more memory and time.

Export for the edit

After successful transcription, choose the required export: Avid captions, SRT or timestamped TXT. For Avid, set the sequence start and matching frame rate. Supported rates are 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97 NDF and 30 fps. Fractional rates use non-drop-frame numbering.

Understand time references

SRT and timestamped TXT are relative to the audio start. Avid output uses the configured sequence start. Check a short import against picture before preparing a full sequence. 29.97 drop-frame is not supported in this beta.

Review the result

Whisper segments become caption cues directly. Review names, dialogue, punctuation, cue lengths and timing. The current beta does not provide a caption editing table; revise the exported result in your subtitle or editorial workflow.

If something stalls

Allow the first model download to finish and use a smaller model if memory is limited. Export remains disabled until transcription succeeds. Starting a new job clears the previous result. The app blocks closing while processing, and repeated clicks do not start overlapping jobs.
